Guest Speaker, Artist, Dr Eleanor Gates-Stuart: Magnified, 12 years of the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, National Archives of Australia (2015)
Known until 2014 as the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, the prize was established by the South Australian Museum (SAM) in 2003 as a means of drawing connections between science/natural history (which is their main focus as a museum) and art. The competition was named in honour of Frederick George Waterhouse, an eminent zoologist and first curator of the SA Museum, which opened in January 1862.
SAM and National Archives of Australia (NAA) have collaborated on a retrospective exhibition, which focusses on the 12 overall winners from all past competitions. Accompanying the 12 artworks are items from the collections of SAM, NAA, the State Library of South Australia (SLSA) and the State Herbarium of South Australia. Artists are encouraged to explore the beauty and fragility of nature through scientific and environmental themes.
